OPEN POSITION: Handbell Choir Director

Position Type: Part-time: 5-10 hours per week during program year.
Reports To: Minister of Music

Job Description

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Hand bell Choir Director selects music appropriate to the abilities of the members of the handbell choirs, leads weekly hand bell choir rehearsals, and directs the performances of the hand bell choirs during worship services.

ESSENTIAL JOB ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Educate handbell choir members regarding handbell music performance and teach handbell ringing techniques to ringers of varying levels of musical ability, manual dexterity, and handbell ringing experience and proficiency.
  • Lead weekly rehearsals of the hand bell choirs and prepare the handbell choirs to perform monthly at Sunday services and other seasonal worship services throughout the church year.
  • Select music appropriate to the church season and according to the ability and number of handbell ringers available to perform the music.
  • Periodically appeal to church members to join the handbell ministry.
  • Direct the proper handling, storage, maintenance, and polishing of the handbells.

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Participate in all meetings of the Worship, Music, and Arts Committee, including program appraisal meetings and planning meetings.
  • Prepare and submit an annual budget for handbells to the Worship, Music and Arts Committee.
  • Demonstrate fiscal responsibility in the spending of the budget allocated to the handbell choirs.
  • Maintain professional competency by practicing, performing, teaching, and participating in continuing education opportunities and reading professional journals.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Demonstrate a professional level of musical talent gained through training and experience.
  • Demonstrate a thorough working understanding of the congregation's worship services and the theological understanding of church music.

PREFERRED SKILLS

  • Collaborate and work cooperatively with Senior Pastor, Minister of Music, handbell choir members, other staff members, and members of the church community.
  • Communicate effectively and in a friendly manner with all members of the church community.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Able to move freely in and out of the church sanctuary.
